Jeremy & I are signed up for Blockbuster Online where we get 3 movies at a time in the mail. We fill it up with movies that either are older & we've never seen or some we didn't go to the theater for because we didn't want to risk spending $15 on disappointment. One movie we put on the list because we didn't want to see it in the theater was United 93, which we watched Monday night. We couldn't get ourselves to pay $15 on a movie where we know the ending & it's not a good one.
United 93, as we all know, is about what happened in our country on September 11, 2001. It focuses on the plane that later crashed in a field in Shanksville, PA. They didn't bother to focus on particular characters on the plane. Some had more speaking parts than others but most you didn't even catch their names.
The movie also focuses on Air Traffic Control & the confusion & frustration they went through that day. They were watching CNN as United Flight 175 hit the 2nd tower. Watching their reactions brought back memories of when I first saw it on tv.
I won't bother going through the details of the movie as we all know what happens. There really isn't a whole lot of speculation due to so many passengers calling their families & telling them what was going on. It was very difficult to see these people talking to spouses, kids, or parents telling them they love them & goodbye.
Once they figure out that this is a suicide mission they come up with a plan to take over. There was actually a small flight pilot on board who they hoped would be able to at least safely land the plane. They attacked the 2 terrorists in the back with hot water, forks, knives, & just plain beating them. You start cheering for them. The 2 terrorists in the cockpit realize what's going on & start ascending & rocking the plane around trying to keep the passengers from climbing to the front. But little by little they make it & bust the door in. They try to take control but cause the plane to do a nose-dive & there was just no way they could have brought it back up. The movie ends there with some facts about the day.
Seeing the terrorists at the beginning made us both sick to our stomachs. Just angers you. Then towards the end when the passengers fight back you can't help but be on the edge of your seat hoping they'll make it & survive, even though we all know what happens. Unfortuantly it doesn't end like we expect most movies to end.
Over all, it was a good movie, despite what it was about. There is some language & violence from when the terrorists first take over & stab quite a few people.
Many asked if it was too soon for this movie & also for World Trade Center, which we haven't yet watched. Personally, I do think it was too soon. You get the feeling that the directors were already thinking of scripts while it was all fresh on the news. But with this movie I don't feel that the people were exploited & it was respectful to them.
If you watch it, just prepare yourself for it. I think after 5 years we kind of become numb to talk of that fateful day. But seeing it again just brings it all right back.
