14 Weeks Pregnant!

This week's big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you're having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.

In other news: Your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

We had another doctor's appointment yesterday. Not real eventful but that's ok. He checked for the heartbeat. It probably took him less than 10 seconds but it felt more like 10 hours. Jeremy said I started turning white. But once he moved a little to the left he found it. It was beating in the 140s so it's very good.

Other than that we just discussed a few questions I had & that was it. We go back on Sept 9 which will put me at 18 1/2 weeks. It'll be the same kind of appointment. And at that time we'll schedule the BIG ultrasound for 2 weeks later. So at least in 6 weeks we'll find out who's in there.

For those wondering, yes, we already have our names picked out. We've had them picked out for 3 years. They are very special to us. So special that we're not telling until we know who's in there.

I can tell this 2nd trimester is getting better. My energy is coming back at least during the day. I still get tired in the evening. The nausea is slowly getting better. I'm trying to take the Zofran every 2 days. And I'm definitely getting bigger & bigger. Maternity pants are wonderful! So comfy! At some point I will post some belly pics. I'm not showing my belly itself. Sometimes I feel like I just look fat. But some clothes show that it's not just a gut but it's a baby belly in the making.
